Safety tips

Most people on Africa.red are here for the right reasons. These habits protect you from the few who aren't.

Dating and new friends

  • Never send money, airtime, gift cards or mobile-money codes to someone you met online, whatever the story: a sick relative, a stuck parcel, a plane ticket, an investment.
  • Be careful with people who quickly declare love, avoid video calls, or want to move to another app straight away.
  • Meet for the first time in a busy public place, arrange your own transport and tell a friend where you're going.
  • Don't share your home address, workplace or financial details until you really know someone.
  • Be wary of anyone asking for intimate photos. Never send images you wouldn't want shared.

Buying and selling

  • Meet in a public place and inspect the item before paying. For phones, check that it isn't locked or reported stolen.
  • Avoid paying deposits to sellers you haven't met. Prefer pay-on-delivery or pay-on-collection.
  • For property, never pay before viewing in person and checking that the person can legally rent or sell it.
  • Prices far below the market are a warning sign.

Jobs

  • Genuine employers never charge for interviews, training, uniforms or visas.
  • Check the company exists and the job description is specific.
  • Be cautious with job offers abroad and never hand over your passport.

Your account

  • Use a unique password, and never share it or a code we email you.
  • Use Block and Report from the three-dot menu on any profile, post, message or ad.

If you are in danger, contact local emergency services first.
